I am rigging an old 470. The mainsail traveller is equipped with two cars. I wonder what's the length of the line connecting the two cars and the mainsheet block. Is there a "perfect" length or this is based on personal preferences? Thanks in advance.

In my boat, we use a similar (the same?) system, and our length is exactly 15 inches, measured from the bearing point on the traveler car to the bearing point on the mainsheet block. This length works fine throughout the entire range of rake settings. I bet that there are a bunch of differences between your older Vangaurd and my 2006 McKay, but the leech length should be the same...so 15 inches should work for you too. We had a problem with chafing at the traveler car attachment point, so we put smooth shackles on the car to give the line a smoother surface to sit against.
