Hi,
I just picked up 470 #696- or at least that's the number on the sails. I believe it is from the early 80's. There is evidence of how to configure most of the rigging systems, but I have few if any clues about how the spinnaker halyard should be set up on this boat. Does it use a 3:1 "pumping" configuration? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Also, it looks like the hiking straps have rotted away. is there a good place to look for webbing or affordable straps.
Thanks!

Hello,
I have a Vanguard from the early 80 and use a z-spar mast with line exits through the heel. I can describe how I have my system set up. and perhaps it might help you.
The setup consists of two lines. One that attaches to the spinnaker and passes down through the mast. And a second that controls the halyard once it exits the bottom of the mast and with which I actually do the hoist.
Here is how it works: the halyard exits the base of the mast (leading toward the stern) It passes through a block attached to that second line, and then loops back and ties off to a shackle secured to the bulkhead just in front of the maststep. The second line, the one with the block, is then lead aft all the way to the transom, where it passes through a turning block and heads back along the keelson toward the centerboard case. Just in front of the case, i have a cleat attached to the keelson and then another block which, when the line is pulled, forces the rope down into the cleat. This makes a 1:2 pull, and I can do the hoist in a single sweep without much difficulty.
I hope this helps.

Thanks, that helps a lot. I think there is a shacke on the bulkhead, so this boat must have been rigged the same way.

Here's a system Harken has that seems to be popular with racers today. It's a bit more complex than what rsuhay suggests, but the shock cord take-up system looks pretty cool. They describe it as follows:
Spinnaker System
This system is all about speed. A 1:2 reverse purchase on the halyard quickly hoists the spinnaker while a 1:5 shock-cord halyard take-up system automatically manages accumulating line during the rapid chute deployment. A control in the cockpit drops the sail. (numbers are Harken part ID's)
